"UPA Left Shattered Economy": Union Minister On Morgan Stanley Report

Morgan Stanley's report on how India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed and gained a position in the world order in less than a decade is the "best and sharpest indictment" of the Congress-led UPA's "lost decade between 2004 and 2014", Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday.

Speaking to PTI, he said the report reminds Indians how the Congress-led UPA had in 2014 left "a shattered economy". Nine years later, India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world with record FDI, the minister said.

"This report that says how India is transformed in less than a decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in my opinion the best and sharpest indictment of the UPA's lost decade between 2004 and 2014," he said.

In the report, Morgan Stanley said significant scepticism about India, particularly with overseas investors, ignores the significant changes that have taken place in India, especially since 2014.

Rejecting criticism that India has not delivered its potential (despite it being the second-fastest-growing economy and among the top-performing stock markets over the past 25 years) and that equity valuations are too rich, saying such a view ignores the systematic reforms in the last nine years.

Chandrasekhar said, "The report goes into details and it reminds Indians that how in 2014 the Congress' UPA had left a shattered economy, almost 14 quarters of runaway inflation, 12 quarters of decline in economy and industrial production, investors running away from the country, a broken financial sector that was characterised by crony corrupt lending by banks, and international big investors like Telenor, Nokia running away from India." "That was the situation in 2014 that this report has rightfully captured," he told PTI.

The Union minister said India has come through the Covid pandemic, one of the "most disruptive times" in the history of the world, and emerged as a stronger nation that has earned "all the respect of the world".

"Whether it is the formalisation of the economy, tax rates that are comparative with the world, and infrastructure... We have become the largest infrastructure in the world today.

"We are the fastest growing innovation economy in the world. We are becoming a technology power in the world... Most importantly, from the eleventh largest economy in the world, we have become the fifth in a short span of nine years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he added.

Chandrasekhar said the report indicates that Prime Minister Modi has not only been working for the growth of the nation but he has expanded the economy and brought stability and security.

"He has created good governance despite the fact that in 2014 the UPA and the Congress government had left a total mess for Prime Minister Modi ji to inherit," he added.

Video Of MS Dhoni Strapping His Knee During IPL 2023 Goes Viral. Watch

For MS Dhoni, the IPL 2023 was a special one in many ways. From the start of the edition, one man who was showered with all the adulation at every venue was MS Dhoni. Wherever Chennai Super Kings played, be it at home in Chennai or in away matches, Dhoni had the crowd backing him. Ultimately, Dhoni's CSK lifted the IPL title by defeating Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad. After the final, Dhoni even mentioned that he will try and play one more IPL season, but added that it would also require huge physical effort from his side.

Dhoni will be seeking expert opinion from sports orthopedics in Mumbai on the state of his dodgy left knee before taking a call on his treatment, CEO Kasi Viswanathan said on Wednesday. Now, a video has gone viral on social media where it can be seen that Dhoni is strapping his knee.

Dhoni had played the entire IPL season with a heavily strapped left knee and although he looked absolutely okay while keeping, more often than not batted as late as No.8 and didn't look swift while running between the wickets.

"Yes, it is true that Dhoni will be taking medical advice for his left knee injury and accordingly decide. If surgery is advised, it can only be ascertained after reports come out, it will be completely his call," Viswanathan told PTI.

Is there a possibility that Dhoni will decide against playing next season and thus free up a purse of Rs 15 crore for the mini auction, the CEO replied: "Frankly, we are not even thinking on those lines as we haven't reached that stage.

"It will be completely Dhoni's call. But I can tell you in CSK, we haven't entertained those thoughts," Viswanathan said.

Maharashtra's Ahmednagar To Be Renamed After This 18th Century Ruler

The Ahmednagar district in western Maharashtra will be renamed after Ahilyadevi Holkar, the legendary 18th century ruler of the Indore state, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Wednesday.

Mr Shinde was speaking at a function at Choundi in the district, the birthplace of Ahilyadevi (also known as Ahilya Bai), to mark her 298th birth anniversary.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said at the function that he would request Chief Minister Shinde to rename Ahmednagar city as 'Ahilyanagar'.

"Our government works keeping in mind the ideal of governance set by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Ahilyadevi Holkar. Therefore, as per the wish of all of you, we have decided to rename (the district) for Ahilyadevi Holkar," Mr Shinde said in his speech.

Mr Fadnavis said that had Ahilyadevi Holkar not been there, "there would not have been Kashi, temples of Lord Shiva." The ruling alliance of the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena was a "Hindutva government," he added.

The Deputy Chief Minister also noted that before this, the Shinde government renamed Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.

The city of Ahmednagar, 120 km northeast of Pune, is said to have derived its name from the 15th century ruler Ahmad Nizam Shah

3 Women In China Team Up To Send 'Boyfriend' To Jail After He Conned Them

In an incident that seems straight out of a movie, three women in China teamed up to expose a man who posed as a love interest and cheated them of 100,000 yuan (Rs 11,67,982), South China Morning Post reported. As a result of the police investigation, the Shanghai man has received two years and six months in jail.

It all started when the three women went to a police station in Shanghai's Yangpu District on February 10 to report He Shiwei of deceiving them. The women claimed that Shiwei borrowed money from them, but never returned it.

One of the women, Chen Hong, said that she began to get suspicious of Shiwei and checked his phone after he fell asleep drunk. She found multiple messages from another woman asking him why he was rejecting her calls. Chen then contacted a woman named Xiao Fan and found out that she lived with Shiwei, who usually came to her flat to sleep every night.

Chen and Xiao found that Shiwei had told both of them he wanted to marry them.

That was not it. On February 10, Chen got a call from a third woman, named Zhao Lin, saying she was also Shiwei's girlfriend. When he got up, Chen confronted him and demanded he return the money he took from her. Upon his refusal, all three women reached the police station to file a complaint.

It was evident that they had been sharing the same boyfriend. He had been dating Chen since October 2022, Xiao since June 2022  and Zhao since 2021.

The police found that Shiwei had quit his job in 2020 and was unemployed since then. He had been using the money from the women to pay his debts.

Meanwhile, the three women who became good friends during the course of the investigation, went on an overseas trip together after the man was imprisoned. When a police officer called them with an update on the case in March, he got to know that the women were on holiday abroad together.

''We got along well during the trip. We were discussing a question every day such as – what virtue or ability did he have to enthrall all of us? This scenario was so fun. All three of us are pure and good-hearted. It shows that He is good at judging people, so he managed to cheat money from us,'' Chen told SCMP.

"Gift From My Side": Dhoni's Huge Update On Retirement After IPL Title Win

MS Dhoni provided a massive update regarding his potential retirement after Chennai Super Kings clinched their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title by beating Gujarat Titans by five wickets (DLS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The CSK skipper, who equalled Rohit Sharma as the captain with most IPL titles, said that announcing his retirement will be the "easy thing" but he wants to train for the next nine months and try to play in the next season as a "gift" for his fans.

"Looking for an answer? Circumstantially if you see this is the best time for me to announce retirement. But the amount of love and affection that I have been shown, wherever I have been this year...I think the easy thing for me to say would be to say 'Thank you very much', but the tough thing for me would to work hard for nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL. But a lot depends on the body. It would take 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side. It's not easy for me but the way they have shown their lose and affection, that's something that I need to do," he said at the post-match presentation.

"My eyes were full of water, I needed to take some time off in the dugout. I realised I need to enjoy this. I think they love me for what I am, they love that I am so grounded, I don't try to portray something I'm not. Just keep it simple. Every trophy is special, but what is special about IPL is every crunch game you need to be ready," he added.

Under the stewardship of Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings embellished their already fabulous record in the IPL with a fifth title triumph, beating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in a thrilling summit showdown.

Dhoni has been the cynosure of all eyes ever since the Indian Premier League began this year and in a fitting end to the finale, the captain finished with a record-levelling fifth trophy.

B Sai Sudharsan slammed 96 in 47 balls as Gujarat Titans posted 214 for four after being asked to bat first.

Set a revised target of 171 in 15 overs after rain interrupted play at the start of the second innings of a final that was pushed to the reserve day owing to heavy downpour, CSK completed the task in the last ball, in what could turn out to be Dhoni's final outing in the T20 league.

Ravindra Jadeja struck a six and a four off Mohit Sharma in the final two balls to win it for CSK and even as the players in the yellow jersey run onto the field, Dhoni remained in the dugout, his eyes closed.

Neither the juggernaut of the Gujarat Titans nor bad weather for two days could stop Dhoni's men from drawing level with their arch rivals Mumbai Indians, in terms of most IPL trophy wins.

It remains to be seen whether Dhoni would return to lead CSK once again next year or not, as the entire IPL and even the final was all about Dhoni-mania.

Watch: The Moment Jadeja Hit Last-Ball 4 To Clinch 5th IPL Title For CSK

At last, it was worth the wait. The IPL 2023 final which was supposed to end on May 28, finally finished on May 30 (IST) and MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings clinched a thriller for a record-equalling fifth IPL title. CSK completed the task in the last ball against defending champions Gujarat Titans at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in what could turn out to be the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni's final outing in the T20 league. Ravindra Jadeja struck a six and a four off Mohit Sharma in the final two balls to win it for CSK.

B Sai Sudharsan slammed 96 in 47 balls as Gujarat Titans posted 214 for four after being asked to bat first. Set a revised target of 171 in 15 overs after rain interrupted play at the start of the second innings of a final that was pushed to the reserve day owing to heavy downpour, CSK kept their calm till the end.

Earlier, GT were off to a flying start with their opening duo of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill putting on 67 runs in seven overs.

While Gill was sent back by star left-arm spinning all-rounder Jadeja for a 20-ball 39, Saha went on to make 54 off 39 balls to lay a strong foundation for a formidable total.

Saha was dismissed by seamer Deepak Chahar, who had dropped Gill when the batter was on 3.

Sudharsan, who has also been in good form in recent times, hit six sixes and eight fours in his whirlwind knock.

Tushar Deshpande gave away 56 runs in his four overs.

Martin Scorsese Announces Film On Jesus After Meeting Pope Francis: Report

Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese announced on Saturday that he will make a film on Jesus Christ following his meeting with Pope Francis, Variety reported. The veteran director is currently in Italy attending a series of religious and cinematic events. Before the conference titled ''The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination,'' Mr. Scorsese and his wife Helen Morris were introduced to Pope Francis during a private audience.

After the meeting, the director announced that he would be making a film on Jesus Christ.

''I have responded to the Pope's appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,'' he said. He added, ''And I'm about to start making it.''

Antonio Spadaro, the editor of the periodical which organised the conference said that the conversation between Pope and the director included shared film references and anecdotes.

Representatives for Mr. Scorsese told The Guardian they had no further information on the project other than that the director had already provided.

This is not the first time that the director has been inspired by religion to make a movie.

According to Deadline, he previously made 'The Last Temptation of Christ' in 1988, 'Kundun' about the life of the Dalai Lama, in 1997, and 'Silence' about Jesuit Christians in 2016.

The 80-year-old filmmaker is known for his movies like 'Goodfellas', 'Shutter Island', 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Taxi Driver', 'The Irishman' and 'Gangs of New York'.

His most recent project is Killers of the Flower Moon, a historical crime drama that chronicles the mysterious deaths of the Osage tribe in the United States. The movie had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and received a 9-minute-long standing ovation after it was screened.

Australian Boss Introduces 'Bare Minimum Mondays' To Combat 'Monday Blues'

We all are familiar with the concept of Monday blues--the negative feelings that people have at the beginning of a work week after a weekend. People might feel lower levels of job satisfaction and increased stress at the beginning of the working week. Now, a new job trend called 'Bare Minimum Mondays' is sweeping through workplaces after a TikToker introduced it as a way to prioritise self-care.

The trend is now being popularised in Australia by marketing manager Caitlin Winter, who introduced this among her team and says it's been ''one of the best decisions she's ever made'' as a boss, news.com.au reported.

As the name suggests, 'Bare Minimum Mondays' is a practice in which employees arrive at work on Mondays to do the bare minimum, often starting the day late after a productive morning of self-care rituals, as per Forbes. The trend promotes a ''gentle start'' to the working week by easing the usual pressures and expectations that arise after the weekend.

Ms. Winter said it was a way for staff to take their day at their own pace and to treat themselves with ''space and kindness'' to set up for a productive week.

''A lot of people think it means I sit in my PJs all day in front of the TV and do no work. But in reality, it is simply a day where we work from home, don't schedule any meetings, and generally just treat ourselves with a little more space and kindness to set up for a productive week ahead," Ms. Winter told news.com.au.

The 31-year-old said she first came across the idea after reading an inspiring article on the topic by Marisa Jo, the creator of the concept.  For most of her life, she says she has experienced anxiety on Sunday evenings in anticipation of the big week ahead.

''Sunday nights have always meant the Sunday Scaries for me, but introducing bare minimum Mondays for me and my team means I can go to bed not feeling that sense of dread. I can wake up a little later on a Monday morning, go to my gym class, and then ease into my work week feeling refreshed and energised,'' she added.

So far, she has noticed that her small team has been impressive, with overall happiness and productivity improving.

While some loved the concept, others have labelled it as lazy, asserting that it undermines productivity and professionalism.

Last year, a similar work trend called ‘Quiet Quitting' went viral, encouraging employees to slow down and reassess their work.

US Debt Ceiling Deal: Key Takeaways

President Joe Biden and House Republicans have reached a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling and avert a devastating default.

Here, AFP details the key takeaways from the agreement, which still needs to be approved by a divided Congress in a vote on Wednesday.

Did either side win?

After days of long, difficult talks, the deal allows both sides to claim a victory of sorts. Biden called it a "compromise" while Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy described it as "worthy of the American people."

The 99-page text was released Sunday night and the agreement will be subject to scrutiny and debate in the coming days.

Some demands from both camps were not accepted, such as the elimination of certain tax loopholes requested by Democrats, and the repeal of clean energy tax credits sought by Republicans.

The crux of it

Formally known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, the Bill provides for an increase to the debt ceiling of $31.4 trillion for two years, meaning Biden will crucially not need to negotiate it again before the November 2024 presidential election.

The deal also places limited curbs on federal spending that will please some Republicans, but it does not deliver the big cuts that right-wingers wanted and which progressive Democrats would have balked at.

Spending

The deal holds non-military spending roughly flat for the 2024 fiscal year from this year. It also limits the increase by one percent for 2025, according to the proposed Bill.

The agreement preserves plans by the Biden administration to increase spending for the military and veterans in line with inflation as well.

IRS clawback

The deal also pares back funds allocated for the expansion of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Last year, Congress approved $80 billion for the IRS to boost tax enforcement. The debt ceiling agreement pulls back $10 billion to spend in other areas.

Unspent Covid money

The deal would also take back some funding that Congress allocated for the coronavirus pandemic but did not spend. A statement from McCarthy's office said the deal would rescind "billions in unspent Covid funds" but offered no further specificity.

No changes will be made to Medicaid, the government's health insurance program for the most disadvantaged Americans.

Work requirements

The deal establishes work requirements for people who are receiving federal food assistance or on family welfare, in a victory for the Republican side.

It is set to raise the age at which childless adults will be required to work to receive food stamps from 49 to 54. As a concession to Democrats, the deal relaxes the requirements for veterans and the homeless.

'Dhoni And Reserve Day' Bring Back Harrowing Memories Of 2019 WC Semis

The final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 headed into the Reserve Day after play could not be possible on Sunday due to persistent rain at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Fans turned up in numbers hoping to see MS Dhoni lift the IPL trophy for the 5th time in his career with the Chennai Super Kings but had to return home disappointed. Though Dhoni's men are scheduled to take on Gujarat Titans on Monday, the prospect of Dhoni playing on a 'Reserve Day' brought back some horrible memories.

It was the semi-final of the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup between India and New Zealand when the match had to be shifted to the 'Reserve Day' because of rain on the scheduled day. New Zealand pacers, particularly Matt Henry, ran riot in overcast conditions to put India on the backfoot early on.

The match also saw Dhoni, the last hope of the Indian team, being run-out by Martin Guptill, helping the Kiwis secure an 18-run win. The match turned out to be Dhoni's last in the Indian jersey, with the former skipper deciding to retire from international cricket a few months later.

Seeing the IPL 2023 final heading into a Reserve Day too, fans fear if this would be the last time they would see Dhoni bat in the IPL too.

After the Qualifier 1, Harsha Bhogle had asked Dhoni about his future plans. The former India captain didn't give a clear answer and said he has about 8-9 months to decide whether he will play next year or not.

"I don't know. I have 8-9 months to decide. The small auction will be around December. So why to take that headache right now? I have ample time to decide. But, I will always be there for CSK whether it's in the playing form or sitting somewhere outside. I don't really know," Dhoni had said.

As for the CSK vs GT final on Reserve Day, the name of the winner can be decided even via a Super Over if rain disrupts proceedings again. If play is not possible at all, Gujarat Titans will be declared winners as they finished higher in the league stage of the campaign.

Mumbai's Bandra-Versova Sea Link To Be Named After Savarkar: Eknath Shinde

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the upcoming Bandra-Versova sea link in the western part of Mumbai will be named after Hindutva ideologue late VD Savarkar, while a state-level gallantry award on the lines of the one given by the Centre will also be named after him.

Speaking in New Delhi on the birth anniversary of Savarkar, the Chief Minister said some people were deliberately maligning the former for their selfish gains and out of fright that they will have to shut shop if his thoughts become popular in society.

It was the first time Savarkar's birth anniversary was being celebrated in the state government-constructed Maharashtra Sadan there, he added.

"The critics of Savarkar know if his thoughts become popular in society, they will have to shut shop. Imagine how terrified they are that they oppose Savarkar even after 57 years of his death," he said.

"There have been deliberate and consistent attempts to malign the image of Savarkar by some for their selfish gains. It is unfortunate even after 57 years of his death, some people fail to understand him. It angers me to see some people deliberately try to malign his image," Mr Shinde said.

Savarkar, who was born in Nashik district on May 28, 1883, died on February 26, 1966.

"The upcoming Bandra-Versova sea link will be named after Swatantryaveer Savarkar. On the lines of the Union government's gallantry awards, the Maharashtra government will also set up Swatantryaveer Savarkar gallantry awards," Mr Shinde said.

Woman Quits Job To Become "Full-Time Daughter", Gets Rs 47,000 Per Month

The story of a Chinese woman who quit her job to become a "full-time daughter" for pay of $570 (approximately 47,000) a month from her parents has sparked a meaningful conversation on social media in China.

According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the woman named Nianan, 40, had worked at a news agency for 15 years, however, she experienced changes in her role in 2022 that brought about higher stress levels and the need to be constantly available. During this challenging time, her parents stepped in to offer help.

"Why don't you just quit your job? We'll take care of you financially," they told the 40-year-old, as per the outlet.

Motivated by the offer of a monthly allowance of 4,000 yuan, or $570, from her parents' retirement pension of more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,500), Ms Nianan decided to leave her job and embrace the role of a "full-time daughter". She described her role as "a professional filled with love" and gladly took on a diverse daily routine.

The 40-year-old revealed her daily routine. According to SCMP, she said that in the morning, she spends one hour dancing with her parents and accompanies them on grocery shopping trips. In the evenings, she cooks dinner together with her father. She also manages all electronic-related tasks, serves as a driver, and organises monthly family outings or vacations.

Ms Nianan said that being around her parents has been therapeutic. However, she also admitted that the "biggest pressure source" for her has been the "desire to earn more money". But she said that her parents continually reassure her by saying, "If you find a more suitable job, you can go for it. If you don't want to work, just stay at home and spend time with us".

As per the outlet, the concept of being a "full-time daughter" has gained popularity among young individuals in China as an alternative to the highly competitive job market and exhausting work schedules. This alternative lifestyle is believed to give greater autonomy and freedom from traditional work constraints. However, some critics have reportedly argued that it simply perpetuates dependence on parents.

PM To Inaugurate New Parliament Today Amid Opposition Boycott: 10 Points

  1. According to the tentative schedule, PM Modi will arrive at 7.15 am, followed by a puja 15 minutes later. He will enter the Lok Sabha chamber at 8.35 am.
  2. With carpets from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, bamboo flooring from Tripura and stone carvings from Rajasthan, the new parliament building reflects India's diverse culture. The government has announced a commemorative Rs 75 coin to mark the historic event.
  3. The new parliament building, built by Tata Projects Ltd, has a grand constitution hall to showcase India's democratic heritage, a lounge for MPs, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.
  4. The triangular-shaped four-storey building has a built-up area of 64,500 square metres. It has three main gates - Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar and Karma Dwar - and separate entrances for VIPs, MPs and visitors.

  8. The Sengol, first received by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from the British, had been kept in a museum in Allahabad until now. It will be placed near the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker.
  9. The Congress has rejected the BJP's claim that the Sengol symbolised the transfer of power from the British to an independent India.
  10. BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, has hit back, saying the Congress needs to "reflect" on its behaviour. Mr Shah rejected the Congress's claim that there was no evidence of the Sengol being a symbol of transfer of power.

Henry Kissinger, US' Controversial Ex Secretary Of State, Turns 100

Henry Kissinger, whose very name is synonymous with US diplomacy, turns 100 Saturday feted by the American elite as others seethe that the ruthless Cold Warrior has never faced accountability.

From opening the door to communist China to plotting an endgame to the Vietnam War to unapologetically backing dictators who were anti-Soviet, Kissinger wielded influence like few before or after him, serving as both top diplomat and security advisor to presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Instantly recognizable for his bookishly thick glasses and a sharp-witted monotone that never lost a touch of his native German, Kissinger was first an academic and his intellectual gifts are acknowledged begrudgingly even by some of his harshest critics.

Since leaving office in 1977, Kissinger's brand of realpolitik -- the coldly cynical championing of power and national interests -- has largely fallen out of favor as his successors preached moralism, but Kissinger himself has if anything enjoyed greater repute.

Ahead of his centennial, Kissinger blew candles on a cake at a celebratory luncheon at the Economic Club of New York, the city where he grew up after his Jewish family fled Nazi Germany.

Showing his worldview has not changed at the century mark, Kissinger cautioned for the United States to stay within the bounds of "vital interests," telling the guests, "We need to be always strong enough to resist any pressures."

Bucking the view of most US policymakers, Kissinger called for diplomacy with Russia on a ceasefire in Ukraine, arguing that Moscow has already suffered a strategic defeat.

'He has gotten away with it'

An unlikely playboy in 1970s Washington, Kissinger lives in an apartment on New York's Park Avenue. He has grown wealthy consulting businesses through his relationships in China -- and has warned the United States against treating Beijing as a new Cold War-style adversary.

Long despised by the left, Kissinger has come into the good graces of the mainstream of the Democratic Party.

Hillary Clinton after serving as secretary of state called Kissinger "a friend" and said she "relied on his counsel," while the incumbent, Antony Blinken, teased Kissinger about his stylishness when the elder statesman attended a State Department luncheon last year.

But for many, Kissinger was seen as an unindicted war criminal for his role in, among other events, expanding the Vietnam War to Cambodia and Laos, supporting military coups in Chile and Argentina, green-lighting Indonesia's bloody invasion of East Timor in 1975 and turning a blind eye to Pakistan's mass atrocities during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence.

"To me, there's no doubt that his policies have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and have destroyed democracy in many countries," said Reed Kalman Brody, a veteran human rights lawyer whose cases have included working with victims of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

"I'm bewildered that he has gotten away with it," he said.

Kissinger has never faced serious legal jeopardy, with a US judge in 2004 throwing out a lawsuit related to the assassination of Chile's army chief and the United States boycotting the International Criminal Court.

But Brody said there would be a strong legal case on East Timor where Kissinger not only approved the invasion but ensured US weapons kept flowing to Indonesia's military.

Brody also pointed to a recording, released over Kissinger's objections, in which Kissinger tells Nixon that the air force had orders in Cambodia to hit "anything that moves." Indiscriminate bombing of civilians is a war crime.

Late writer Christopher Hitchens published a book calling for Kissinger to be tried on grounds including tacitly backing Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus.

Belief In Larger Goals

For Kissinger, most important was always the larger goal. On Cyprus, he prioritized solid relations with Turkey. On Bangladesh, Kissinger wanted to preserve Pakistan as a secret channel between the United States and China.

Muntassir Mamoon, a prominent history professor at the University of Dhaka, said that Kissinger "actively supported genocide in Bangladesh."

"I don't find any reason to praise Kissinger," he said, adding that the view was shared in many other countries including Vietnam.

Kissinger was controversially co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a ceasefire in Vietnam alongside Hanoi's Le Duc Tho, who refused to accept the award.

"The irony is that he gets remembered for making peace, but all the ways he contributed to an escalation of the war not only in Vietnam but in Cambodia and Laos get lost," said Carolyn Eisenberg, a historian at Hofstra University who wrote a book on Kissinger.

Eisenberg also played down Kissinger's public image as "some Machiavelian genius," saying that transcripts showed how China's premier Zhou Enlai played him through flattery.

"Zhou Enlai knows that this guy has a huge ego problem," she said.

Brody, despite his criticism of Kissinger, acknowledged that he had a "degree of gravitas and sophistication" that both overshadowed most US policymakers and endeared many to him.

"Perhaps the reward of being on the side of the powerful is that you're only resented and hated by the weak."

Bill Introduced In US Congress To Make Diwali A Federal Holiday In Country

A prominent American lawmaker on Friday introduced a bill in the US Congress to declare Diwali, the festival of lights, a federal holiday, a move welcomed by different communities from across the country.

"Diwali is one of the most important days of the year for billions of people across the globe, and for countless families and communities in Queens, New York, and the United States, Congresswoman Graced Meng told reporters during a virtual news conference here soon after introducing the bill in the House of Representatives.

The Diwali Day Act, when passed by the Congress and signed into law by the President, would make the festival of lights the 12th federally recognised holiday in the United States.

Establishing a federal holiday for Diwali, and the day off it would provide, would allow families and friends to celebrate together, and demonstrate that the government values the diverse cultural makeup of the nation, the Congresswoman said. "Diwali celebrations are a wonderful time here in Queens, and each year it is easy to see just how important this day is to so many people. America's strength is derived from the diverse experiences, cultures and communities that make up this nation," she said.

"My Diwali Day Act is one step toward educating all Americans on the importance of this day, and celebrating the full face of American diversity. I look forward to shepherding this bill through Congress," Meng said.

Welcoming the move, New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said, "This year, we saw our entire state speak with one voice in support of recognising Diwali and the South Asian community."

"My extraordinary partner in government Congresswoman Meng is now taking the movement national with her historic legislation to make Diwali a federal holiday. Together, we are showing that Diwali is an American holiday. To the over 4 million Americans who celebrate Diwali, your government sees you and hears you," she said.

Applauding Meng for her continued work to increase the visibility of the Asian-American community, New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney said naming Diwali a federal holiday not only honours those who observe but highlights a cultural tradition some Americans do not experience regularly.

"Diwali is a special holiday for so many South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities," said New York City Councilman Shekar Krishnan.

"As the first Indian American ever elected to NYC government, I am so proud to support Congresswoman Meng's legislation to establish 'Deepavali' as a federal holiday. It is crucial that children like my own are able to officially celebrate our holidays with their families in a way that I was not able to growing up," he said.

A large number of community members applauded the introduction of the Diwali Day Act in the House of Representatives.

"The recognition of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas is pivotal to enriching the cultural fabric of the United States and fostering greater understanding and appreciation for the rich South Asian diaspora," said Sim J Singh Attariwala, Senior Policy and Advocacy Manager of The Sikh Coalition.

"Today is a milestone that demonstrates our visibility, our contributions, and the progress we are making in the United States with the Diwali Day Act," said Richard David, Board Member at the Indo-Caribbean Alliance.

Congratulation Congresswoman Meng, Coalition of Hindus of North America president Nikunj Trivedi said this joyous festival is celebrated by millions of Americans and symbolizes the victory of good over evil and of light over darkness and brings together people from all backgrounds to cherish goodness, well-being, peace and prosperity - things that everyone can value and benefit from.

"As Hindu Americans, we are so glad to see a bill to honour the multitude of celebrations that take place across the Indian subcontinent, the Caribbean, and beyond on Diwali," said Ria Chakrabarty, Policy Director for Hindus for Human Rights.

"It is high time to recognise Diwali as a holiday in US public schools," said Dr. Neeta Jain, founder and president of the International Ahimsa Foundation.

"Our children should be treated equally. As our children celebrate other cultures, others should celebrate and learn about our culture as well. This is the only way we can teach children to have mutual respect, mutual understanding and mutual acceptance," she said.
