"After 50 Bombs" Comment, Congress Extends Support To Pratap Singh Bajwa

Congress MPs, MLAs and senior leaders today extended support to the state's Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party government of attempting to intimidate him. The leaders said Mr Bajwa has not said anything new and urged the government to focus on the threat to the peace and harmony in Punjab. 

In an interview to a private television channel, Mr Bajwa had claimed that he had information that "50 bombs have reached Punjab". "Of this, 18 have exploded, 32 are yet to go off," he had said.

In a statement, the Congress leaders insisted what Mr Bajwa revealed was already in public domain and was being reported by the media.

Already there have been more than 20 incidents of grenade attacks on police stations, religious places and also the residence of a senior BJP leader, they said. Statues of Baba Saheb Ambedkar have also been desecrated, they pointed out.  

Condemning what they called the high-handed attitude of the government and its attempts to intimidate and implicate Mr Bajwa. 

Congress leaders reiterated that the threat to peace and harmony in Punjab was real. Mr Bajwa had only drawn attention to that while the government was trying to divert the attention, the party said. 

They asserted that the Congress will continue to hold the government accountable no matter how much intimidation it tries to resort to.

Kalyan couple's son Mark Shankar recently survived a fire accident in Singapore while attending a summer camp. He suffered burns to his hands and legs and inhaled smoke in the accident that occurred on April 8.

Anna Konidela offered her hair as a mark of gratitude to the deity.

"In keeping with the tradition, Anna offered her hair at Padmavati Kalyana Katta and participated in rituals," a press release from Janasena party said.

Incidentally, Anna Konidela vowed that she would offer her hair to the deity if her minor son survives the fire accident, it added.

As per Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) rules, Anna Konidela a Russian orthodox Christian, signed declaration forms at Gayatri Sadan in the presence of temple officials declaring her faith in Lord Venkateshwara prior to her visit and participation in the rituals, said the press release.

Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2025: MI post 205/5

Tilak Varma's half century and impactful innings by Surya Kumar Yadav and Naman Dhir powered Mumbai Indian (MI) to post 205/5 in their 20 overs against Delhi Capitals (DC).

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and opted to bowl against the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was left fuming during their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Earlierm Punjab Kings unleashed an all-out assault against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, riding on a blazing half-century from Shreyas Iyer (82) and late fireworks from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 34 in eleven deliveries to reach 245/6 in 20 overs, here at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Zuckerberg Fooling Americans, Is "Hand In Glove" With China: Whistleblower

A former Meta executive, Sarah Wynn-Williams, has come forward as a whistleblower, accusing the company of compromising US national security to establish a substantial business presence in China.

According to Wynn-Williams, Meta executives made decisions that allowed the Chinese Communist Party to access user data, including that of Americans. This testimony was given during a congressional hearing led by Senator Josh Hawley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism.

"I saw Meta executives repeatedly undermine U.S. national security and betray American values," Wynn-Williams said in her opening remarks per CBS News.

Wynn-Williams alleges that Meta built custom censorship tools for the Chinese government, enabling extensive control over content moderation.

Sen Hawley opened the hearing by saying that Meta had "stopped at absolutely nothing to prevent" Wednesday's testimony by Ms Wynn-Williams. He also said, "Why is it that Facebook is so desperate to prevent this witness from telling what she knows?"

"The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot and saying he didn't offer services in China, while he spent the last decade building an $18 billion business there," she said.

Meta disputes these claims, stating that Wynn-Williams' testimony is "divorced from reality and riddled with false claims". However, Wynn-Williams maintains that Meta's actions were deliberate, citing the company's interest in expanding its business in China.

However, the company's spokesperson Ryan Daniels said that although Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg been public about the company's interest in offering its services in China, "[T]he fact is this: we do not operate our services in China today."

Wynn Williams also said that Meta worked "hand in glove" with Beijing to create censorship tools to silence critics of the Chinese Communist Party.

Wynn-Williams claims that Meta threatened her with $50,000 in punitive damages for speaking out, even if her statements are true. Meta clarifies that this amount is for each material violation of her separation agreement, not for testifying before Congress.

In her testimony, Wynn-Williams also alleged that Meta's artificial intelligence model, Llama, was used to help Chinese AI company DeepSeek. This claim has raised further questions about Meta's relationships with Chinese companies and its commitment to protecting user data.

In a statement last year on Llama, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote, "The alleged role of a single and outdated version of an American open-source model is irrelevant when we know China is already investing over 1T to surpass the US technologically, and Chinese tech companies are releasing their own open AI models as fast, or faster, than US ones."

The allegations against Meta come amid heightened tensions between the US and China over national security, economic interests, and technological advancements. The Trump administration has increased tariffs on Chinese goods and is pursuing the sale of TikTok to an American buyer. The House of Representatives has also established a the Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party to investigate China's challenge to American global power.

Putin Labels Russia's 1st Foreign Minister As "Foreign Agent", His Response

Russia has designated its first post-Soviet era foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev as a "foreign agent" over his views on President Putin and his fierce criticism of Moscow over the Russia-Ukraine war. The announcement was made by Russia's Ministry of Justice, which accused Mr Kozyrev of spreading fake news about the country.

Andrei Kozyrev had served as foreign minister under Boris Yeltsen - Russia's first primer minister after the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991. At the time Russia was under severe economic stress, and in order to liberalize the economy, had to maintain close and friendly ties with the West - US and its allies in Europe).

Years later, when Vladimir Putin became President, Mr Kozyrev, who by then had demitted office, opposed much of Putin's policies. For more than a decade, the disgruntled former diplomat stayed in Moscow, but in 2010, decided to move permanently to the United States, who welcomed him.

Since his departure from Moscow, Mr Kozyrev turned into an outspoken and staunch critic of Vladimir Putin, often voicing his unwavering disapproval of his policies. From the very beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, Mr Kozyrev slammed Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.

In the first few weeks of the war, Mr Kozyrev contacted his former colleagues in the Russian foreign ministry to resign in protest. Over the months and years, he built a campaign against the Russian government and continued to actively criticize Moscow's offensive.

Russia's current foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, used to be Mr Kuzyrev's deputy when the latter was foreign minister of Russia between 1990 and 1996. After the war in Ukraine broke out in 2022, Mr Kuzyrev had written, "There was a time when Lavrov used to have my back. Today, I would watch my back if he was behind me."

On Friday, Russia's Justice Ministry released a statement accusing its former foreign minister of distributing "false information" about the Russian government and its policies, as well as the Russian military. It noted Mr Kozyrev's persistent opposition towards the Kremlin and for Moscow's "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Labeling him a "foreign agent", the statement accused the former top diplomat of cooperating "with foreign platforms" to build an anti-Russia narrative in the United States and beyond, but did not specify the details of this claim.

Russia's "foreign agent" designation carries a negative Soviet-era connotation and makes it mandatory for people to identify themselves as a 'foreign agent' on all social media platforms as well as publications, both offline and online. It also makes it compulsory for them to declare their financial transactions and its trails within Russia.

In response to the Russian government's move to label him "foreign agent", Mr Kozyrev mocked the decision, saying it reflected Kremlin's mindset, which highlights "the stupidity of the regime".

"I am glad to join all those noble people who have likewise been designated foreign agents by Russia," he said.

China Sends Proposal To Australia Amid Bitter Fight With US, Gets Rejected

Australia has declined China's proposal to form an alliance against the United States' tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. The decision comes as Washington escalates its trade war with Beijing, imposing a 10 per cent import tax on Australian goods and significantly higher tariffs on Chinese products - 125 per cent.

China's ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, suggested that joint resistance is the only way to counter the US' "hegemonic and bullying behavior." He also said, "The international community... should firmly say no to unilateralism and protectionism."

However, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his country will prioritise its national interests, "speak for ourselves" and not align with China's stance.

Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasised that Australia will not be "holding China's hand" and instead focus on diversifying its trade relationships.

“We're not about to make common cause with China, that's not what's going to happen here. I don't think we'll be holding China's hand,” Marles told Australia's Nine News. “We don't want to see a trade war between America and China, to be clear, but our focus is on actually diversifying our trade," he added.

Australia has expressed frustration over the tariffs but has opted not to retaliate. Instead, the country is seeking further negotiations with the White House. Xiao Qian argued that the US has "weaponised" trade issues, potentially sabotaging the international order and dragging the global economy into chaos. He emphasised the need for Australia and China to cooperate in safeguarding a fair and free trading environment.

Australia is actively exploring alternative export opportunities outside the US. The country aims to reduce its reliance on China and bolster economic resilience by diversifying trade with nations like Indonesia, India, the UK, and the UAE. "Eighty percent of trade does not involve the United States. There are opportunities for Australia and we intend to seize them", Albanese said. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell has recently met with counterparts from Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and India.

According to the World's wealthiest Cities Report, which is published by advisory firm Henley and Partners, more than 11,300 millionaires have abandoned London between January and December last year. A data intelligence firm New World Wealth seconds that finding.

But the situation isn't dire yet for The Square Mile, as the British capital is popularly called. The city still has 215,700 millionaires - though a year ago, that number was 227,000. For the first time in many decades, London couldn't make it to the 'Top 5 Wealthiest' list either. Los Angeles took its place at number five.

In fact, London lost the most number of millionaires (11,300) compared to any other European city. At 10,000, Moscow was second, despite Russia being at war.

REASONS FOR THE EXODUS

Business opportunities, especially in the IT sector, was also one of the reasons London was affected. "The growing dominance" of Asia and America's lead in tech "caused several tech entrepreneurs and millionaires to reconsider their base," said Andrew Amoils, head of research at New World Wealth.

Writing to news agency AFP, he claimed that "Brexit has arguably had an exacerbating effect on this". He also highlighted that taxes in London are among the highest in the world. "Capital Gains tax and estate duty rates in the UK are amongst the highest globally. This, he said, deters high net-worth individuals, wealthy entrepreneurs, and retired people from wanting to live in London, or for that matter, anywhere in the UK.

Another indicator, he said, is the "dwindling importance" of the London Stock Exchange, which now no longer figures in the top 10 stock exchanges in the world in terms of market capitalisation. Financial hubs in Asia, like Dubai, and closer home in Europe, like Frankfurt are much sought after, he said.

ASIA AND AMERICA - A MILLION-DOLLAR CHOICE

Asia and America are surging ahead in terms of millionaire residents. In the last decade, San Francisco Bay area saw a whopping 98 per cent rise in the number of millionaire residents , while Singapore in Asia recording a 62 per cent rise in millionaires. 

Seven out of the top 10 cities with the maximum number of millionaire residents were either in America or in Asia. New York City, The Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Chicago were American cities in the 'top 10' list, while Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong were Asia's three on that list.

Cities like Dubai, Tokyo, Los Angeles all recorded a surge in dollar millionaires. New York City continued to hold the top spot with 384,500 millionaires.

Video - "That's Not Breakfast": Delhi Police To Man 'Drinking' Inside Metro

A man was seen on camera chilling with a glass of 'liquor' and a boiled egg inside a moving Delhi Metro train.

The police took note of it after the video went viral and a passenger complained to them.

In the video taken by a passenger, the man was seen taking three swigs of 'liquor', looking from side to side to check if he would be caught. He took a bite of the boiled egg between the swigs.

The Delhi Police posted the video on X and explained what action they have taken for 'drinking' in public, that too inside the metro.

"Eggs and alcohol in the metro? That's not breakfast - that's a breach. Break the rules, face the consequences. Rules aren't suggestions - they are the law," the police said in the post.

The accused is a resident of north Delhi's Burari.

"The accused person admitted his offence and a legal action was initiated against him u/s 59 of DMRC Act," the police said.

However, the man claimed he was drinking the apple juice Appy Fizz, and making a video of it.

"... In the video, I was seen eating an egg and drinking 'alcohol'. It was not daaru (alcohol) but Appy Fizz," the man said.

"I did the wrong thing. I request everyone not to do any such thing. Today I have to face the law because of what I did. I seek forgiveness," he said in the video posted by the police.

Forged Degrees, Stolen Equipment: 'Fake' Doctor's Trail Of Deception

Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav, alias Dr N John Kamm, a man who posed as a UK-returned cardiologist and treated dozens of patients at Damoh's Mission Hospital without a valid medical license, will be in police custody for five days.

His arrest came in the wake of a harrowing revelation: He allegedly conducted 15 surgeries in 45 days. Seven of the patients died.

As he was escorted to a local court today under heavy security, enraged locals attempted to assault him.

NDTV's exclusive investigation has exposed the layers of deception in this chilling case.

From forged medical degrees to stolen medical equipment, the story of Narendra Yadav is a disturbing tale of fraud and systemic oversight.

Hospital Alleges Theft

Yadav had adopted the name Dr N John Kam to operate within Mission Hospital, Damoh. And he stands accused not only of forgery, fraud and endangering lives, the hospital has also accused him of theft.

CCTV footage from February 2 obtained by NDTV shows him arriving at the hospital accompanied by a personal bouncer carrying a suitcase. The suitcase allegedly contained a portable echo machine, now reported stolen.

"He took our portable echo machine worth Rs 5-7 lakh. We have lodged a complaint," said Pushpa Khare, Manager, Mission Hospital.
 
The Fake Degrees
 
NDTV has traced Narendra Yadav's alleged degrees: MBBS from North Bengal Medical College, MRCP from St George's Hospital, London, DM (Cardiology) from Pondicherry University.

However, these credentials don't hold up under scrutiny.

Sources said the MBBS registration number belongs to a female doctor, and no credible records exist for the other qualifications. 
"The degree appears to be fake and morphed," confirmed senior police officer SP Shrutkirti Somvanshi. 

"His mobile, tab, and even emails suggest fabricated identities. He has possibly been operating in Madhya Pradesh impersonating a doctor for seven or eight years. We are questioning him using medical terminology to verify the extent of his knowledge-or lack thereof," she added.

This is not the first time Yadav's fraudulent practices came to light.

In 2006, he operated on former Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Rajendra Prasad Shukla at the Apollo hospital. Sources said sources during his tenure, eight patients died there.

At that time, too, investigations pointed toward a fake MBBS degree. 
"I was present when my father's surgery took place. I grew suspicious after seeing repeated catheter removals," said Anil Shukla, retired High Court judge and son of the late Speaker. 

"Despite Apollo Hospital branding him as a London-returned expert, 
we were misled. This case deserves a probe by a sitting High Court judge," he added.

In Chhattisgarh, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur, Dr Pramod Tiwari, has now taken action against Apollo Hospital. A formal notice has been issued to the hospital management, seeking a detailed explanation on the appointment of the fake doctor.

The hospital has been asked to submit all documents of his educational qualifications and clarify what action, if any, was taken against him in connection with the deaths of several patients, including the former Speaker.

A Congress delegation meanwhile visited Apollo Hospital and demanded details about Narendra Yadav's appointment and the verification process of his documents. 
 
In his 42-day tenure at the Damoh Mission Hospital, the imposter examined around 70 patients and conducted 15 surgeries, seven of which proved fatal.

The Chief Medical and Health Officer or CMHO and the agency that facilitated his hiring will also be questioned, said Ms Somvanshi. 
"We are looking into who is responsible, from the agency to hospital officials. CMHO's statement will also be recorded," the officer confirmed.

This case highlights the systemic failure that extends from the hospital's verification process, to Medical Council's lack of due diligence, and the misplaced trust of families mourning the loss of their loved ones.

Peon Caught Evaluating Answer Sheets In Madhya Pradesh, Principal Suspended

The principal of a government college in Narmadapuram district and a professor were suspended after a viral video purportedly showed a peon evaluating students' answer sheets.

Sources said that aggrieved students had contacted local MLA Thakurdas Nagvanshi, who then lodged a complaint with the authorities.

Responding to the incident, Minister for Youth Affairs and Cooperatives Vishvas Sarang confirmed that the principal and the nodal officer have been suspended.

The minister said action has also been taken against the professor (who was assigned the work to evaluate answer sheets) and the peon.

"Instructions have been given to ensure such incidents do not recur. The government always strives to maintain the quality of higher education. This incident is unfortunate and unforgivable. The strictest action will be taken," he said.

Rakesh Verma, the principal of Pipariya-based Bhagat Singh Government College, claimed that he and Professor Ramgulam Patel were suspended on April 4.

Mr Verma stated that the answer sheet evaluation work had been assigned to a guest teacher, who then handed it over to a peon via a book lifter posted in the college.

A complaint was raised in January this year after the video clip surfaced on social media, Mr Verma added.

He further claimed that Professor Patel had been appointed as the nodal officer for the evaluation work by Raja Shankar Shah University, Chhindwara.

"I was implicated," Mr Verma claimed while sharing a letter related to Patel's appointment as nodal officer of the evaluation work, issued last August.

Mr Verma mentioned that he has written to the Higher Education Department, requesting the revocation of his suspension.

Trump Says "Not Looking" At Pause In Tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he was not looking at a pause on tariffs to allow for negotiations with trading partners but said he would talk to China, Japan and other countries about the duties.

Asked during a White House press availability with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he was open to pausing tariffs, Trump said: "Well, we're not looking at that. We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate deals with us and they're going to be fair deals. And in certain cases they're going to be paying substantial tariffs. There'll be fair deals."

Trump reiterated his threat to add another 50% tariff on Chinese imports unless that country withdraws its threat to add a 34% tariff on its goods.

Twenty Years On, This US Couple's Disappearance Is Still A Mystery

Twenty years ago, on a Saturday night, Richard Petrone Jr and his girlfriend Danielle Imbo, accompanied by their friends, went out to a bar in Philadelphia. Once the outing was over, Mr Petrone Jr was supposed to drop Ms Imbo off at her home in New Jersey and head back to his apartment in Philadelphia. Their friends or anyone else never heard back from them after they left the bar, CNN reported.

Investigators found no forensic evidence of the couple's whereabouts after they were last seen at the bar, retired FBI special agent Vito Roselli, who was the case's first lead investigator, said.

Their truck was not spotted on any of the area's toll bridge cameras and the couple's credit cards and bank accounts registered no activity, he added.

The couple, along with Mr Petrone Jr's 2001 black Dodge Dakota pick-up truck, just disappeared into the night. 

His mother Marge Petrone said she knew something was wrong when she didn't immediately hear back from him. "His phone was never off - it was always in his hands," she told CNN.

To this day, there are no leads in the case. No one in the family thinks the couple planned their disappearance and relocated to a different area to start a new life. At the time, they were parents to a teen and a toddler, respectively. According to their families, they would never just abandon their kids.

Mr Roselli, who now works in cybersecurity for an international company in Miami, says, "It stays with me. Like, 'What did I miss?' ... is constantly living rent-free in my head. But also because you want to see closure for the two families."

FBI's Philadelphia office says the matter remains a top priority. According to one of the statements, following the couple's disappearance, the FBI collaborated with law enforcement from other jurisdictions in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

They dispatched divers to investigate the Delaware River and other bodies of water between Philadelphia and Mount Laurel. Investigators followed leads in many states and examined financial, phone, and road toll data. They also looked into a flurry of theories, but nothing brought any fruitful results. 

Technology was less developed in the early 2000s than it is now, which limited the scope of the investigation. While forensic science has advanced much since then, in this instance, it hasn't had much of an impact, as there is no physical evidence.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the case.

Students Say Missed Exam Due To Pawan Kalyan's Convoy, Cops Reject Claim

Thirty students in Visakhapatnam could not reach their exam centre and failed to take the engineering entrance exam, apparently after being delayed by the convoy of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The upset parents are now voicing their concern about the long-term impact on their children's academic futures.

Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan holds the crucial science and technology portfolio.

Students from the Pendurthi AI Digital JE Advanced programme -- who were taking the  Joint Entrance Examination (Main) which determines admissions to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) -- said with the traffic blocked, they had reached their exam center late. All 30 were turned away from the exam hall gates and not allowed to sit for the exam, they said. 

B Kalavathi, the mother of a student, claimed that her son was delayed due to traffic restrictions enforced for Pawan Kalyan's convoy. "We were stuck in traffic. It was halted because Kalyan was on his way to Araku," Kalavathi was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

Another parent said he appealed to the Deputy Chief Minister to consider rescheduling the exam for the affected students.

In a press release, the All India Students' Federation (AISF) blamed the officials for inefficient traffic management during exam hours. The students had missed the opportunity to write the exam through no fault of their own, it said.

Karthik Yellapragada, the spokesperson of the opposition YSR Congress, said the state "deserves a better science and technology minister". "The actor-politician, true to his cinematic image, continues to treat public office like a press release event... It is time that we stop clapping to cinematic moments and start demanding real accountability," he added in a video message. 

NDTV has contacted Pawan Kalyan's office but has received no response. 

In a post on X, the city police claimed the students were expected to reach the exam centres by 7 am and had these 30 students been on time, there was no question of their being held up by traffic.
"As per the admit card of the above-mentioned examinations, every candidate has to report at 07:00 am and the gate of the examination centre will be closed at 8:30 am," read a rough translation of their post.

The Deputy Chief minister, the police said, "passed through the said junction at 8:41 am".

"Therefore, it is clear that the movement of the Deputy CM through that area at 8:41 AM has nothing to do with the late arrival of the students who were supposed to report at 7 am," the post read.
Traffic on the BRTS Road and Gopalapatnam-Pendurthi Service Road has not been stopped till 8:30 am to ensure free movement of the candidates to the exam centre, the police said. 

"Moreover, since the commencement of these examinations on April 2, if we look at the first shift on each examination day, the number of absent candidates (including latecomers) at the centre was 81, 65, 76 and 61, which means that the number of absent students (including latecomers) is less today," it added.

Market Panic Deepens As World Scrambles To Temper Trump Tariffs

Asian markets took a huge plunge Monday as US futures pointed to significant losses on Wall Street over Donald Trump's punishing tariffs, even as countries sought compromise with the defiant president.

Trump denied Sunday he was intentionally engineering a selloff and insisted he could not foresee market reactions, saying he would not make a deal with other countries unless trade deficits were solved. 

"Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something," he said of the market pain that has seen trillions of dollars wiped off the value of US companies since the beginning of his tariff rampage.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he added that he had engaged with world leaders on the issue to seek resolution over the weekend, claiming "they're dying to make a deal."

China retaliated against the United States on Friday, announcing it would impose tit-for-tat tariffs of 34 percent on all US goods from April 10 after Asian markets closed last week. 

With the trade war escalating, stocks in Asia took a heavy hammering when trading resumed. 

In early trade on Monday in Japan the Nikkei 225 was off more than seven percent and the broader Topix was down almost eight percent, while in Seoul South Korea's Kospi was down close to five percent. Australia's main stock index fell around six percent.

Futures contracts for the New York Stock Exchange's main boards were sharply down Sunday, suggesting more pain for battered Wall Street stocks when markets open Monday, while US oil dropped below $60 a barrel for the first time since April 2021.

'Deals And Alliances'

Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel -- which has been hit with 17 percent tariffs, despite being one of Washington's closest allies -- will fly in for crunch talks with Trump Monday on the levies.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned in a newspaper op-ed that "the world as we knew it has gone," saying the status quo would increasingly hinge on "deals and alliances."

Trump's staggered deadlines have left space for some countries to negotiate, even as he insisted he would stand firm and his administration warned against any retaliation.

"More than 50 countries have reached out to the president to begin a negotiation," Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, told ABC's This Week on Sunday, citing the US Trade Representative.

Vietnam, a manufacturing powerhouse that counted the US as its biggest export market in the first quarter, has already reached out and requested a delay of at least 45 days to thumping 46 percent tariffs imposed by Trump.

Hassett said countries seeking compromise were doing so "because they understand that they bear a lot of the tariffs," as the administration continues to insist that the duties would not lead to major price rises in the United States.

"I don't think that you're going to see a big effect on the consumer in the US," he said. 

'Markets Bloodbath'

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also told NBC's Meet the Press that 50 countries had reached out.

But as for whether Trump will negotiate with them, "I think that's a decision for President Trump," Bessent said. 

"At this moment he's created maximum leverage for himself... I think we're going to have to see what the countries offer, and whether it's believable," Bessent said. 

Other countries have been "bad actors for a long time, and it's not the kind of thing you can negotiate away in days or weeks," he claimed.

Despite hopes for negotiations to avert the worst economic carnage, in Asia the markets bloodbath continued into the new trading week.

In Saudi Arabia, where the markets were open Sunday, the bourse was down 6.78 percent -- the worst daily loss since the Covid-19 pandemic, according to state media.

Larry Summers, formerly Director of the National Economic Council under president Barack Obama, said "there is a very good chance there's going to be more turbulence in markets the way we saw on Thursday and Friday."

Peter Navarro, Trump's tariff guru, has pushed back against the mounting nervousness and insisted to investors that "you can't lose money unless you sell," promising "the biggest boom in the stock market we've ever seen."

Russia has not been targeted by the latest raft of tariffs, and Hassett cited talks with Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine as the reason for their omission from the hit list.

On Wednesday a White House official suggested the reason for Russia's omission was because trade was negligible thanks to sanctions.

Trump has long insisted that countries around the world that sell products to the United States are in fact ripping Americans off, and he sees tariffs as a means to right that wrong.

"Some day people will realize that Tariffs, for the United States of America, are a very beautiful thing!" Trump wrote on Truth social Sunday.

But many economists have warned that tariffs are passed on to consumers and that they could see price rises at home.

Men Carrying Saffron Flags Climb UP Dargah, Raise Slogans: Cops

Members of right-wing groups in Prayagraj created a ruckus on the occasion Ram Navami today by climbing on the dargah of Salar Masood Ghazi Miyan in the Sikandra area. A video of the incident is being widely circulated online.

Reports say some people carrying saffron flags suddenly climbed on the roof of Ghazi Miyan's dargah -- located in Ganganagar zone of Prayagraj -- in the afternoon. 

They raised slogans and waved the flags near the dome of the dargah. 
In the video, three men carrying saffron flags are seen reaching the dome, while dozens gathered below raise slogans. 

The group had reached the dargah on bikes. They made off before the police arrived at the spot.

Manendra Pratap Singh, who leads the right-wing group, has described himself as a student leader of Allahabad University, former state president of Karni Sena and a leader of BJP in his Facebook profile. 

Singh uploaded the video in a Facebook post. The caption said that Salar Masood Ghazi was an invader and his dargah should not be there in the pilgrim city of Prayagraj. He demanded that the dargah be demolished immediately.

The police are investigating the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said some miscreants waved saffron flags and raised slogans at the dargah, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

Departmental action is being taken against the policemen who were responsible for maintaining order at the spot, he said.

The DCP said there are five shrines at the Ghazi Miyan Ki Dargah. Both Hindu and Muslim devotees come to offer 'chadar' at the dargah, he said.

Legal action will be taken after investigating this matter, the officer added.

"Ask a first-year student of economics. She will tell you that the 'economic metric' will always be higher than in the previous years. The GDP's size is bigger now than before. The size of the central budget is bigger every year than in the previous year. Government's total expenditure is bigger every year than in the previous year," he added.

"You are one year older than in the previous year. In terms of 'numbers', the number will be bigger but is it higher in terms of proportion of GDP or in terms of proportion of total expenditure?" the former Union finance minister asked.

Against the backdrop of the ruling DMK crying foul over the allocation of funds, PM Modi -- during his visit to the state on Sunday -- said the central government allocated three times more money for Tamil Nadu's development over the past decade compared to the period before 2014.

He noted that this increased funding had greatly contributed to Tamil Nadu's economic and industrial growth.

Despite the increased allocation, some "cry" over funds, the prime minister said, referring to beneficiaries from the state in respect of several initiatives.

USAID Team Laid Off While In Myanmar Earthquake Zone: Report

Three US aid workers were laid off while in Myanmar helping the rescue and recovery from the country's massive earthquake, a former senior staffer said, as the Trump administration's dismantling of foreign aid affects its disaster response.

After travelling to the Southeast Asian nation, the three officials were told late this week they would be let go, Marcia Wong, a former official at the US Agency for International Development, told Reuters.

"This team is working incredibly hard, focused on getting humanitarian aid to those in need. To get news of your imminent termination - how can that not be demoralising?" said Wong, former deputy administrator of USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, which oversees Washington's disease response efforts overseas.

President Donald Trump's government has pledged at least $9 million to Myanmar after the magnitude-7.7 quake, which has killed more than 3,300. But his administration's massive cuts to USAID have hindered its ability to respond, while China, Russia, India and other nations have rushed in assistance.

The Trump administration has moved to fire nearly all USAID staff in recent weeks, as billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has slashed funding and dismissed contractors across the federal bureaucracy in what it calls an attack on wasteful spending.

The three USAID workers have been sleeping on the streets in the earthquake zone, Wong said, adding that their terminations would take effect in a few months. Residents have been sleeping outside for fear of aftershocks and further building collapses, 

Wong said she is in contact with the remaining USAID staff and that she heard about the terminations after an all-staff meeting on Friday.

Former USAID staff say most of the people who would have coordinated the response have been let go, while third-party implementing partners have lost contracts.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday rejected criticism that Washington was slow to respond to the March 28 earthquake because USAID was dismantled.

Rather, he told reporters in Brussels, Myanmar was not "the easiest place to work", saying the military government does not like the United States and prevents it from operating in the country as it wants to.

The United Nations has said the junta was limiting humanitarian aid.

Rubio said the US would no longer be the world's top humanitarian donor, calling on other wealthy nations to step up in assisting Myanmar.

US Moves Largest B-2 Bomber Fleet, 3 Aircraft Carriers To Indo-Pacific

While the world was busy figuring out Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff move and its fallout, the United States quietly made a massive military move in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.

The Pentagon ordered the largest-ever deployment of B-2 bombers in the Indian Ocean. Satellite images have shown at least six B-2 stealth bombers parked along the military base runway in Diego Garcia - a joint Indian Ocean military base of the US and Britain. There may be more in shelters or hangars impenetrable by satellite or radar.

The United States has a total of 20 B-2 stealth bombers - the world's most advanced military aircraft, of which six have now been deployed in the Indian Ocean Region - that's roughly 30 per cent of its fleet, accounting for a massive strategic move.

Besides this, the US has also planned to increase its aircraft carrier presence in the Indo-Pacific region from one to three - two in the Indian Ocean and one in the western Pacific, near the South China Sea.

The Pentagon has planned for the USS Carl Vinson to head to the Middle East while the USS Harry S. Truman will continue ops from the Arabian Sea. The third aircraft carrier - the USS Nimitz and its carrier strike group fleet will move towards the South China Sea.

But this is not the end of US' massive deployment surrounding Asia. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that US Secretary of Defence Peter Hegseth has "also ordered the deployment of additional squadrons and other air assets that will further reinforce our defensive air-support capabilities." He however, did not elaborate what these squadrons or assets would comprise.

WHY THE SUDDEN MASSIVE DEPLOYMENT?

After the sudden and massive military deployment, the Pentagon justified it saying "This has been done to improve America's defensive posture in the region. The United States and its partners remain committed to regional security, and are prepared to respond to any state or non-state actor seeking to broaden or escalate conflict in the region."

YEMEN AND THE HOUTHIS

Though no country or terrorist organisation was named directly, several defence analysts point to the situation in the Middle East and south Asia - especially Iran and Yemen. Over the last fortnight, US President Donald Trump has steadily increased military action against the Yemen-based Houthis - a militant group backed by Iran - which has been targeting American merchant and military ships over US' support to Israel. Iran and all its "proxies" have been supporting Hamas - a US-designated terror organisation in Gaza, which is currently at war with Israel.

But defence experts say that the scale of the US military deployment is far too big to be just for the Houthis or for Iran. They argue that two B-2 bombers - each with a payload capacity of 40,000 pounds - would have been more than sufficient to tackle the militants in Yemen.

Last week, Donald Trump had openly warned the Houthis and its backers in Iran. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump wrote, "Stop shooting at US ships, and we will stop shooting at you. Otherwise, we have only just begun, and the real pain is yet to come, for both the Houthis and their sponsors in Iran."

IRAN'S NUCLEAR FACILITIES

Over the last month, Donald Trump has mounted pressure on Iran to renegotiate its nuclear deal - a move that Tehran has outrightly rejected. In an interview to Fox News last month, President Trump had said, "There are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal. I would prefer to make a deal, because I'm not looking to hurt Iran."

Donald Trump made the US exit what he had called a "bad nuclear deal" with Iran during his first term. He now wants Iran to engage in talks in order to bring a new and improved nuclear deal.

In his 2017-2021 term, Donald Trump withdrew from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that placed strict limits on Tehran's disputed nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. President Trump also reimposed sweeping US sanctions.

But since then, Iran has far surpassed that deal's limits on uranium enrichment.

President Trump now wants a new deal, and has not ruled out the use of force. Washington may consider destroying Iran's nuclear facilities and labs, and thereby finish off Iran's nuclear weapons programme, should Tehran not be willing to talk.

Speaking about Iran, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said on Thursday that "The Secretary of Defence continues to make clear that, should Iran or its proxies threaten American personnel and interests in the region, the United States will take decisive action to defend our people." Though he did not mention anything about nuclear talks with Tehran.

CHINA AND RUSSIA

Such a massive deployment of America's most advanced fighter aircraft, bombers, and aircraft carriers, is also aimed at sending a signal to China and Russia, who are Iran's allies in the region.

Washington's move to deploy the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in the western Pacific also sends a clear message to Beijing that the US is serious about safeguarding its interest in the Indo-Pacific region.

And the deployment of the USS Carl Vinson in the Middle East sends a similar message to Moscow.

4, 6, 4, 4: KKR's Rs 23.75 Crore Buy Thrashes Cummins, Eden Gardens Erupt

Kolkata Knight Riders' under-fire middle order finally delivered as Venkatesh Iyer silenced his critics with a 25-ball fifty while Angkrish Raghuvanshi struck a fluent half-century to power KKR to 200/6 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Thursday. KKR's new-look opening pair continued to struggle, with Quinton de Kock (1) and Sunil Narine (7) falling cheaply after SRH opted to bowl. But an 81-run partnership by skipper Ajinkya Rahane (38 from 27b) and Raghuvanshi (50 off 32 balls; 5x4, 2x6) laid the foundation for a competitive total.

SRH gained ground in the middle overs when 26-year-old Sri Lankan Kamindu Mendis delivered a rare sight in IPL history, bowling with both hands in the same over on debut.

The ambidextrous Sri Lankan first bowled left-arm spin to Raghuvanshi before switching to off-spin against the left-handed Rinku Singh.

The over proved pivotal as he dismissed Raghuvanshi, breaking KKR's momentum.

Momentum slowed with boundaries drying up for two overs, but Iyer (60 off 29 balls; 7x4, 3x6) and Rinku (32 not out from 17 balls; 4x4, 1x6) reignited the innings.

Iyer's desperate pull off a Simarjeet beamer ended the drought, and Rinku smashed three consecutive boundaries off Harshal Patel before Iyer tore into Simarjeet with back-to-back fours.

Rinku capped off the over with a massive six over long-on, yielding 17 runs.

Iyer was at his belligerent best against Cummins in the 19th over, hammering the SRH skipper for 4, 6, 4, 4 in succession as KKR notched their first 200-plus total of the season. The hosts hammered 78 runs in last five overs.

Earlier Pat Cummins struck early in the third over, setting up de Kock with a short ball that was miscued to deep midwicket, while Shami dismissed an out-of-sorts Narine with a wide yorker that took the edge behind.

From 16/2 in 2.3 overs, KKR recovered through an 81-run stand between Rahane and Raghuvanshi.

Rahane broke the shackles with two crisp pull shots for sixes off Shami and Cummins, as KKR reached 53/2.

Raghuvanshi complemented Rahane with stylish stroke play, piercing gaps with drives through cover and square region.

His standout strokes came against Zeeshan Ansari -- a clean lofted six over long-off and a well-placed reverse hit past backward point. He reached a well-deserved 50 off 30 balls.

However, Ansari broke the partnership in the same over as Rahane gloved a reverse sweep to Heinrich Klaasen.

Captain Cummins' decision to underutilise spin on a pitch with variable bounce was debatable.

Leg-spinner Ansari bowled just three overs (1/25), while Mendis wasn't given another over after his match-turning spell.

Asked To Wait A Year To Get Married, Man Stabs Woman, Kills Her Mother

Enraged at being asked to wait a year to get married, a man barged into a 20-year-old woman's home in Visakhapatnam, stabbed her and killed her mother when she tried to intervene. 

Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police Shanka Brata Bagchi said the man, Naveen, was in love with Nakka Deepika, 20, for the past six years. He wanted to marry the woman, but her father had asked him to wait for a year as he did not like his behaviour. 

Around 12.30 pm on Wednesday, Naveen barged into Deepika's house in Swayamkrushi Nagar in Visakhapatnam's Kommadi area with a knife. He stabbed Deepika and also attacked her mother, Lakshmi, 43, when she intervened to try and protect her. 

Lakshmi died on the spot while Deepika was rushed to a hospital, where her condition is said to be critical. Naveen fled immediately after attacking the women. After neighbours called the police, they began investigating, and a team arrested Naveen near Srikakulam district.

After they were informed about the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Home Minister V Anitha spoke to police officials. The Chief Minister asked the officials to provide the best possible treatment to the injured woman and take stringent action against the accused.

Ms Anitha also directed the police to ensure that the culprit got the harshest punishment. 

'Many Incidents Every Day'

The opposition YSR Congress accused the Chandrababu Naidu-led government of not being able to curb the rising cases of crimes against women

"Such incidents prove how alarming the situation is in the state when it comes to the safety of women. On average, 70 incidents against women take place every day. The accused in the Visakhapatnam incident must be caught and severely punished," said YSR Congress Party leader and Member of Legislative Council Varudu Kalyani.

"Like Mahatma Gandhi, I Tear This Bill": A Owaisi During Waqf Bill Debate

Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of AIMIM and the MP from Hyderabad, today held a symbolic protest against the Waqf Bill, citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi. Participating in the debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, Mr Owaisi had cited the example of Mahatma Gandhi while he was in South Africa.

"If you read history, you would see that he (Mahatma Gandhi) said about the laws of white South Africa, 'My conscience doesn't accept this' and he tore it up. Like Gandhi, I am also tearing up this law. This is unconstitutional. The BJP wants to create divisiveness in this country in the name of temples and mosques. I condemn this and I request you to accept the 10 amendments," he said.

His outburst was a response of sorts to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who, during the debate, had said, "A member even said the minorities won't even accept it. Who are you trying to scare? It's the parliament's law, everyone will follow and accept it".

Mr Owaisi was speaking towards the end of a marathon debate that had started at noon after the Waqf Amendment Bill was presented in parliament. 

The Opposition had rallied against the bill and had been arguing their case without yielding ground to the government, which already has the numbers. Unlike other times, there have been no slogan-shouting, protests or walkouts.

The Opposition has contended that the bill is unconstitutional and violates the fundamental right to practice religion, Article 14, which guarantees equality before law and Article 15, which bars discrimination on basis of religion. 

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal has contended that Waqf Amendment Bill "is a dangerous, divisive law".

"I expected so many legislations to come during this period. For last several years, farmers have been on the street, they are demanding legal guarantees for MSP. But the Bill is not coming. Youngsters of this country are unemployed and in despair. So, the country expected legislation for drastic change for the youth of the country. But it didn't come...You can see the legislation that has been given priority by this government. This is to have only one agenda - to divide Bharat Mata in the name of religion," Mr Venugopal said.  

Sections of the Muslim community have maintained that the amendments in the Waqf bill are geared to help the government gain control of the Waqf properties -- arguments the BJP speakers rubbished today.

Democrat Cory Booker Sets Record With 25-Hour Senate Speech, An All-Nighter

In a feat of determination, New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker held the Senate floor with a marathon speech that lasted all night and into Tuesday night, setting a historic mark to show Democrats' resistance to President Donald Trump's sweeping actions.

Booker took to the Senate floor on Monday evening, saying he would remain there as long as he was "physically able." It wasn't until 25 hours and 5 minutes later that the 55-year-old senator, a former football tight end, finished speaking and limped off the floor. It set the record for the longest continuous Senate floor speech in the chamber's history. Booker was assisted by fellow Democrats who gave him a break from speaking by asking him questions on the Senate floor.

It was a remarkable show of stamina as Democrats try to show their frustrated supporters that they are doing everything possible to contest Trump's agenda. Yet Booker also provided a moment of historical solace for a party searching for its way forward: By standing on the Senate floor for more than a night and day and refusing to leave, he had broken a record set 68 years ago by then Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, a segregationist and southern Democrat, to filibuster the advance of the Civil Rights Act in 1957.

"I'm here despite his speech," said Booker, who spoke openly on the Senate floor of his roots as the descendant of both slaves and slave-owners. He added, "I'm here because as powerful as he was, the people are more powerful."

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the first Black party leader in Congress, slipped into the Senate chamber to watch Booker on Tuesday afternoon. He called it "an incredibly powerful moment" because Booker had broken the record of a segregationist and was "fighting to preserve the American way of life and our democracy."

Still, Booker centered his speech on a call for his party to find its resolve, saying, "We all must look in the mirror and say, 'We will do better.'"

"These are not normal times in our nation," Booker said as he began the speech Monday evening. "And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate. The threats to the American people and American democracy are grave and urgent, and we all must do more to stand against them."

Booker warns of a 'looming constitutional crisis'

Shifting his feet, then leaning on his podium, Booker railed for hours against cuts to Social Security offices led by Trump adviser Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. He listed the impacts of Trump's early orders and spoke to concerns that broader cuts to the social safety net could be coming, though Republican lawmakers say the program won't be touched.

Booker also read what he said were letters from constituents. One writer was alarmed by the Republican president's talk of annexing Greenland and Canada and a "looming constitutional crisis."

Throughout the day Tuesday, Booker got help from Democratic colleagues, who gave him a break from speaking to ask him questions. Booker yielded for questions but made sure to say he would not give up the floor. He read that line from a piece of paper to ensure he did not slip and inadvertently end his speech. He stayed standing to comply with Senate rules.

"Your strength, your fortitude, your clarity has just been nothing short of amazing and all of America is paying attention to what you're saying," Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said as he asked Booker a question on the Senate floor. "All of America needs to know there's so many problems, the disastrous actions of this administration."

As Booker stood for hour after hour, he appeared to have nothing more than a couple glasses of water to sustain him. He later told reporters that he had fasted for days before the speech and stopped drinking fluids the night before.

He suffered through cramps as the day wore on, he said. Yet his voice grew strong with emotion as his speech stretched into the evening, and House members from the Congressional Black Caucus stood on the edge of the Senate floor in support

"Moments like this require us to be more creative or more imaginative, or just more persistent and dogged and determined," Booker said.

Booker's cousin and brother, as well as Democratic aides, watched from the chamber's gallery. Senator Chris Murphy accompanied Booker on the Senate floor throughout the day and night. Murphy was returning the comradeship that Booker had given to him in 2016 when the Connecticut Democrat held the floor for almost 15 hours to argue for gun control legislation.

His Senate floor speech breaks Thurmond's record

Still hours away from breaking Thurmond's record, Booker remarked Tuesday afternoon, "I don't have that much gas in the tank."

Yet as anticipation in the Capitol grew that he would supplant Thurmond, who died in 2003, as the record holder for the longest Senate floor speech, Democratic senators filled the chamber to listen and the Senate gallery filled with onlookers. The chamber exploded in applause as Schumer announced that Booker had broken the record.

Booker told reporters afterward that he had thought of Thurmond's speech ever since he arrived in the Senate, calling it a "strange shadow to hang over this institution."

Throughout his determined performance, Booker repeatedly invoked the civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis of Georgia on Tuesday, arguing that overcoming opponents like Thurmond would require more than just talking.

"You think we got civil rights one day because Strom Thurmond - after filibustering for 24 hours - you think we got civil rights because he came to the floor one day and said, 'I've seen the light,'" Booker said. "No, we got civil rights because people marched for it, sweat for it and John Lewis bled for it."

Booker's speech was not a filibuster, which is a speech meant to halt the advance of a specific piece of legislation. Instead, Booker's performance was a broader critique of Trump's agenda, meant to hold up the Senate's business and draw attention to what Democrats are doing to contest the president. Without a majority in either congressional chamber, Democrats have been almost completely locked out of legislative power but are turning to procedural manoeuvres to try to thwart Republicans.

Can his speech rally the anti-Trump resistance?

Booker, serving his second Senate term, was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 2020, when he launched his campaign from the steps of his home in Newark. He dropped out after struggling to gain a foothold in a packed field, falling short of the threshold to meet in a January 2020 debate.

But as Democrats search for a next generation of leadership, frustrated with the old-timers at the top, Booker's speech could cement his status as a leading figure in the party.

On Tuesday afternoon, tens of thousands of people were watching on Booker's Senate YouTube page, as well as on other live streams. A small group gathered outside the Capitol to cheer him on.

Booker said he was ultimately calling on all Americans to respond not just with resistance to Trump's actions but with kindness and generosity for those in their communities.

He said, "I may be afraid - my voice may shake - but I'm going to speak up more."

India Talks Of "Lessons" For Both To Remember As Ties With China Turn 75

1. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was the chief guest at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, which organised an event to celebrate 75 years of establishing India-China ties. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong and the Indian Foreign Secretary cut a cake on the occasion before speaking about the relations between the two Asian giants.
2. In his nearly seven-minute speech, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the "lessons" for both nations to keep in mind in order to foster stronger ties. He began his speech by saying, "Even tough, as modern nation states, we have had only 75 years of formal ties, India and China have shared cultural and civilizational ties and people-to-people contacts going back millenia."
3. He spoke about significant "contributions by personalities such as Bodhidharma, Kumarajiva, Xuanzang, and Rabindranath Tagore," towards fostering historical India-China relations. He added that "Our two civilizations have, each in their own unique way, played a significant role in shaping human history. This holds a lesson for contemporary ties."
4. Speaking about the second lesson, Mr Misri said, "In the last few years, India-China relations have gone through a difficult phase. But largely, due to the guidance by our leaders, and untiring efforts by the political leadership, military leaders, and diplomatic colleagues, who maintained communications throughout this time, our two countries have resolved several issues along the border areas. This too, holds a lesson for us (China and India) - which is that peace and tranquility in the border areas is critical for the smooth development of our overall bilateral relations."
5. He went on to say that "It is on the basis of this fundamental understanding, which was shared in the meeting between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping in Russia, that both nations are now working together to chart a roadmap for our bilateral relations, to return to a stable, predictable, and amicable path."
6. Sharing specifics about the efforts made at the political, military, and diplomatic levels, the foreign secretary highlighted that "In the last 5 months, we have had two meetings between the foreign ministers - in November, 2024 and February 2025. Our Special Representatives (SRs) for the India-China boundary question met in Beijing in December, 2024 for the 23rd round of SR-level talks. After a gap of nearly five years, our Defence Minister met with his Chinese counterpart in November, 2024, and I (foreign secretary) had the opportunity to visit Beijing in January, 2025 and had a very productive meeting with my counterpart."
7. India and China, he said, have decided to take several steps to "resume practical cooperation between our two countries. Amongst the first of these, is the resumption of the Kailash-Mansarovar yatra this year," he said, adding that "We are also discussing the resumption of cooperation on transport and rivers, and on direct air services."
8. He noted that these steps are important and foremost in order to restore mutual trust between the two nations and enhance people-to-people ties. Highlighting the responsibility that the two major economies must live up to, Mr Misri said, "As two large neighbours in an important part of the world, a stable bilateral relationship between our nations will contribute to humanity as a whole. Let us take this 75th year milestone as an opportunity to rebuild our ties."
9. Before concluding his speech, the foreign secretary spoke about the "third lesson" for both nations to keep in mind. "The durable basis for rebuilding our ties is the three-fold formula of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest."
10. In his closing remarks, the foreign secretary acknowledged that "The path forward may be a difficult one, but one that we are prepared for", adding that "It is on the basis of these steps that we have already taken in the last five months, that we have seen promising beginnings" at the end of seven-and-a-half decades. This, he said, should now be "turned into tangible benefit" for the people of our two countries.

Karnataka Government Hikes Sales Tax On Diesel

Karnataka government has hiked the sales tax on diesel to 21.17 per cent with effect from Tuesday, as a result of which there will be an increase of Rs 2 per litre, bringing the sale price to Rs 91.02.

An official statement highlighted that the Karnataka Sales Tax rate on diesel was at 24 per cent prior to November 4, 2021, and the sale price per litre was Rs 92.03. On June 15, 2024, the Karnataka state government issued a notification revising the tax rate on diesel to 18.44 per cent.

"After the approval of the Competent Authority, the Karnataka Sales Tax rate on diesel has been increased to 21.17 per cent, effective from 01-04-2025. As a result, there will be an increase of Rs 2 per litre, bringing the sale price to Rs 91.02," the statement said.

However, even after this increase, the revised sales price in the state will continue to be lower compared to the neighbouring states, it stated.

As on March 31, 2025, the diesel price in Bengaluru is Rs 89.02, whereas in Hosur (Tamil Nadu) it is Rs 94.42, Kasaragod (Kerala) Rs 95.66, Anathapura (Andhra Pradesh) Rs 97.35, Hyderabad (Telangana) Rs 95.70 and Kagal (Maharashtra) Rs 91.07, the statement said.

Criticising the move, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka, accused the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the state of imposing taxes on items one by one.

He alleged that the state government was increasing prices and "sucking blood of poor and middle class people." In a post on "X", he said, "This poor @INCKarnaraka government has increased the price of milk, imposed a cess on garbage collection, and now it has suddenly increased the price of diesel by Rs 2 per litre." "Diesel is the fuel used for transporting goods. Doesn't Siddaramaiah, a self-proclaimed economist, know that if the price of diesel increases, the prices of all essential goods and services, including milk, vegetables, fruits, groceries, taxis, will increase? Bus ticket prices were recently increased without money to pay salaries to transport employees.

"Now there is no doubt that bus ticket prices will be increased again on the pretext of diesel price hike. Siddaramaiah, have you been wondering which items should be taxed and which items should be increased in price?", he added.
